HOW LIGHT OF ESPERANZA HELPS:
School Renovation Projects
Most of the schools in rural Honduras are in great need of repairs. Since 2013, Light of Esperanza has spearheaded initiatives to bring a new sense of pride and respect to the village schools by renovating the dilapidated condition of the buildings.
SCHOLARSHIPS, SCHOOL SUPPLIES, AND NEW
OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE YOUTH....
THE REALITY
- Many youth in rural Honduras do not get a chance to attend school. Instead, they
work in the fields with their families.
- Those that are fortunate enough to study in school lack sufficient school supplies,
textbooks, computers, and the opportunity to continue past the 6th grade without any
outside sources of funding.
- The students in these village are full of hopes and dreams for their futures. Yet,
without support, their potential will never be known.

COMO AYUDA LIGHT OF ESPERANZA:
HOW LIGHT OF ESPERANZA HELPS:

They are in great need of pencils, pens, crayons, notebooks, textbooks, calculators, rulers, computers, backpacks, and other basic school items.

HOW LIGHT OF ESPERANZA HELPS:
LIGHT OF ESPERANZA'S COMPUTER CENTER INITIATIVE
There are those who have labeled the access to technology as a "human right." Without doubt, the ability to lean how to use a computer and explore the wonders of the world of technology opens up countless opportunities.
In 2013, Light of Esperanza has worked together with the Municipality of Dolores, Copan to build the first computer center in the village of Vega Redonda. Since then, Light of Esperanza has opened computer centers in six additional village schools.
With financial donations of cash and in-kind donations of gently used computers, Light of Esperanza hopes to open up new computer centers in the other villages in rural Honduras in the coming years - giving a new generation the tools to be successful and compete equally.

"Celebrating the Youth"
Light of Esperanza annually hosts a "fiesta" for the youngest members of the villages we work with. This festive event brings food and drinks, pinatas, prizes, and countless smiles to the more than 1,000 children that attend.
For many, Light of Esperanza's fiesta is the first time to ever receive a gift in their lives. This special day brings a joy and peace that most of the youth unfortunately do not know. It is with the hope that the smiles that are created on this day a new path towards a better future will be paved.

HOW LIGHT OF ESPERANZA HELPS:
History, Culture and Pride in the Annual School Field Trip
Light of Esperanza sponsors a school field trip for the 6th grade classes of the village schools we work with to visit the Mayan historical site at Copan Ruinas.
Although located only an hour and a half away, almost none of the students have ever had the opportunity to visit this former center of the Honduran Mayan Empire. In fact, this field trip is the first time for the majority of the students to ever leave their village.
We fund the rental of a large school bus, a tour guide, and plenty of food for the students to take part in this incredible experience.

HOW LIGHT OF ESPERANZA HELPS:
A Soccer League for Girls and Boys
In 2012 Light of Esperanza began its sponsorship of two soccer teams in Vega Redonda - a youth and young adult team: "Team Light of Esperanza"
Both youth and adults from Honduras LOVE soccer. It is a passion held close to their hearts. They play wherever they can - with dilapidated balls, without soccer shoes, lacking shin guards, or any of the other common items that most soccer teams have.
Light of Esperanza made sure that our teams have the opportunity to compete equally with other teams from villages with more resources. We have purchased Light of Esperanza jerseys, soccer shoes, and balls for our teams.
In 2013, Light of Esperanza expanded our sponsorship to begin the 1st Girls Soccer League in this part of rural Honduras. Light of Esperanza purchased uniforms, balls and soccer shoes for two girls teams from the villages of Vega Redonda and Dolores to begin this new League. Prior to this, girls were given little opportunity to play. They now have the ability to demonstrate their skills and their love for soccer in the same way as the boys are able to, building the important sense of self-confidence and team work that comes from participating in athletic activities. In 2014, Light of Esperanza added a new girls team to our League from the village of Limon.
Light of Esperanza frequently holds soccer tournaments between the villages in the area, and hopes to continue to be able to expand our sponsorship to include other villages that still lack . soccer shoes and uniforms to be able to play soccer with the same resources.
HOW LIGHT OF ESPERANZA HELPS:
SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
In 2013, Light of Esperanza started its Scholarship Program with two extremely bright students from the village of Vega Redonda, Melvin and Delmer. Despite their intelligence and excellent grades in elementary school, these youth, like so many others, were unable to continue their studies past the 6th grade due to a lack of funds to pay the cost of studying.
Now in its fourth year, Light of Esperanza’s Scholarship program has become a very successful endeavor that addresses the need for financial support of promising students to continue their education.
Due to the reality that females in Honduras have less opportunity to study, Light of Esperanza gives preference to female applicants for the Scholarship program who come from deeply impoverished families. Light of Esperanza is dedicated to opening the doors of education to these young girls who have all of the potential to reach beyond the social limitations and expectations imposed on their lives when giving the chance to do so.
Scholarships for students to attend the village "Collegio" middle school (7th - 9th grade) costs $250 a year. Scholarships for a student to attend the high school program in the town of Santa Rosa de Copan costs $750 a year.
Light of Esperanza currently has 11 youth sponsored to study in 2016. Five of the scholarships (Yadira, Delmer, Roxana, Yareli and Nuri) are for youth who are studying at the high school program in the town of Santa Rosa de Copan, six of the scholarships (Ingrid, Yoselyn, Sarahi, Emerita, Evelyn and Marlen) were awarded to youth who are studying in the village “Colegio” 7th – 9th grade programs. The scholarship youth receive all necessary school supplies, uniforms, shoes, backpacks, copies of school materials, and all other necessary equipment to have a successful year at school.
